This book is a somewhat good approximation to the Latin-American lifestyles of the late XVIII and early XIX century. I bought it hoping to have a very interesting read spaced in that particular time in history. That's not the case here. You have an interesting framing but, the writer is not a great story teller. Characters are flat; protagonists are good, antagonists are bad. The Carvallo family serves as a voice of reason in a society wishing not to change. The writer choses to keep them as bystanders or with little participation in the most important events happening in that timeframe, in most cases just making vague references to them or simplifying them in order to jump to the next event. In conclusion, lacks depth and character development. You get the feeling that, in the end, nothing changed. I kept reading because I was asking myself ok, so let's see how they will deal with the next major event, only to be disappointed on how the issues were quickly bypassed. Maybe if the writer would have focussed in a smaller timeframe the book would have been more exciting. I would recommend this book to someone wishing to have a quick grasp of Venezuela's early republican history but not dive into it.Product details
